What are Dust Mites?

Dust mites are microscopic creatures that resemble small bugs. While they do not bite humans, they feed off dead skin cells that we shed. Humans shed about 1.5 grams of dead skin cells every day, the majority of which ends up in our mattress, enough to feed over 1 000 000 dust mites. Sound like a lot? There can be anywhere from 100 000 to 10 000 000 dust mites in the average mattress, with the warm temperatures and moisture making the mattress the ideal breeding ground for these tiny creatures.

Grossed out? That’s only the start…

While technically not harmful themselves, our bodies react to potent proteins in the dust mite droppings. When inhaled these allergens can trigger symptoms including congestion, sneezing, postnasal drip, and asthma; and can lead to eczema, skin rashes, and itchy eyes when exposed to the skin or eyes.

Although dust mites only live for 2 - 3 months, their droppings continue to cause allergy symptoms long after the dust mite has died.
